Hi all,</h3>
<p style="margin:1em 0px;padding:0px;color:rgb(96,96,96);font-family:Helvetica;font-size:15px;line-height:150%;text-align:left">I
hope you had a relaxing reading week, and have gotten settled back into
a routine already, because we've some great events coming up!
A crucial part of what we stand for as Pirates is the idea
of Free and Open Culture. Our central criticism of existing copyright
laws is that they are actually not good for creators, and instead shift
the control of art towards the powerful and the privileged. A free
culture is not about taking from creators and artists, but is about
responding to and solving this problem. In the words of <b>Lawrence Lessig</b> (the author of <b><a href="http://www.free-culture.cc/freeculture.pdf" style="word-wrap:break-word;color:rgb(109,198,221);font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline">Free Culture</a></b> - if you haven't read it yet, and you're interested in this stuff, read it now!) :
</p><blockquote><i>
"A free culture supports and protects creators and innovators. It does this directly by
granting intellectual property rights. But it does so indirectly by limiting the reach of those rights, to guarantee that follow-on creators and
innovators remain as free as possible from the control of the past. A free
culture is not a culture without property, just as a free market is not a
market in which everything is free. The opposite of a free culture is a
"permission culture" - a culture in which creators get to create only
with the permission of the powerful, or of creators from the past."
</i></blockquote>
Right now, we're going to be celebrating Free and Open Culture with our <b>Free Culture Week</b>!
It's going to be running this Tuesday through Thursday, and will
consist of three film screenings. The first film we'll be showing will
be the famous documentary <b><a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1509428189329683/" style="word-wrap:break-word;color:rgb(109,198,221);font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline">The Pirate Bay - Away From Keyboard</a></b>.
While Hollywood studios have attempted to censor and limit access to
this, and some elements are considered controversial by its subjects,
this film is well worth watching. This will be showing on <b>Tuesday the 15th at 6pm</b>, in the <b>Thomas Davis Theatre in the Arts Block</b>.
<br><br>After that, we will be showing the fantastic Bollywood blockbuster, <b><a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1562935887258167/" style="word-wrap:break-word;color:rgb(109,198,221);font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline">Dhoom 3</a></b>.
This film is completely over the top, ridiculous, and utterly
brilliant, and is in the unusual (and wonderful) situation of having
both some of my favourite action scenes <i>and</i> my favourite song and dance numbers in it. If you're not convinced, try <b><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUDjA1e8VFM" style="word-wrap:break-word;color:rgb(109,198,221);font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline">the trailer</a></b>. We're screening this to showcase the value of global free cultural exchange, and the screening will take place on <b>Wednesday the 16th at 6pm</b>, in the <b>Maxwell Theatre in the Hamilton Building</b>.
<br><br>Finally, we'll be showing <b>Nina Paley's</b> fantastic <b><a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1530312390572183/" style="word-wrap:break-word;color:rgb(109,198,221);font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline">Sita Sings the Blues</a></b> on <b>Thursday the 17th at 6pm</b>, in the <b>Maxwell Theatre in the Hamilton Building</b>.
Described as "enchanting" and "astonishingly original" by Roger Ebert,
and 100% fresh by Rotten Tomatoes, this film is funny, moving, and
generally completely worth watching. It's a perfect movie to finish up
our Free Culture week, as it was released under a <b>Creative Commons License</b> in 2009, and Paley's accompanying words are fitting note to end this email on.
<blockquote><i>
"I hereby give Sita Sings the Blues to you. Like all
culture, it belongs to you already, but I am making it explicit with a
[Creative Commons 0 license ("Public Domain")]. Please distribute, copy,
share, archive, and show Sita Sings the Blues. From the shared culture
it came, and back into the shared culture it goes."<br>
